Major retailer's system outage results in billion-dollar drop in market value

February 24, 2022

By: Leonardo Neri

There was a drastic reduction in the value of the Americanas Group to R$27.9 billion last Monday, the 21st. This amount is R$2 billion less than that found in the last market analysis carried out on February 18, 2022. This drop was exclusively due to the unavailability of the online stores of the group's main platforms, such as Americanas, Submarino and Shop Time.

Regarding the Stock Exchange, BOVESPA announced that the company lost one position in the list of most valuable companies in the market, currently occupying the 33rd position in the ranking. Furthermore, the shares of the S/A fell by 6% after the incident occurred.

After identifying improper access, the security system of Grupo Americanas S/A was suspended, which generated such financial implications.

Given the problems resulting from the aforementioned event, the company has had repeated delays in deliveries, however it confirmed in a note that it will carry them out.

This fact denotes the fragility in the market value of a company today, given the scenarios of systemic uncertainties arising from the area of privacy and data protection, an area that will lead the focus of business investments in the coming years.
