Central Bank of Brazil (BCB) raises limit for foreign exchange transactions

July 31, 2024

The Central Bank of Brazil (BCB) increased the limits for foreign exchange transactions with immediate settlement by financial institutions, as well as brokerage firms and distributors of securities and securities, such as foreign exchange brokers and other non-banking institutions.

In order to raise the limits for institutions to carry out foreign exchange transactions, BCB Resolution No. 401/24, issued on July 17, 2024, amends BCB Resolution No. 277, of December 31, 2022, which regulates Law No. 14,286, of December 29, 202, increasing the personal ceiling for foreign exchange transactions with immediate settlement from US$$ 300 thousand to US$$ 500 thousand (or the equivalent in other currencies).

The objective of this change is to increase efficiency and competitiveness in the foreign exchange market, creating more channels for carrying out foreign exchange transactions, mainly benefiting small and medium-sized Brazilian companies in foreign trade.

In 2023, operations between US$$ 300 and US$$ 500 thousand represented 5% of the quantity and 3% of the volume of export exchange operations, in addition to 2.6% of the quantity and 6% of the volume of import and exchange operations in the Country.

The new resolution will come into effect on September 2, 2024.
