Central Bank Authorizes Automatic Pix Payments to Salary Accounts
The Central Bank of Brazil issued Resolution BCB No. 587, dated September 18, 2026, published in the Official Gazette of the Union on September 21, which amends the Pix Regulations to allow salary accounts to initiate recurring payments through Automatic Pix. The new functionality is scheduled to become operational on July 1, 2027.
This measure is part of a broader set of adjustments to the instant payment system, which includes the regulation of hybrid billing, with payment options via Pix and bank slip in a single transaction, and the improvement of mechanisms for flagging signs of fraud.
What changes for payroll accounts?
A salary account is a type of account exclusively for receiving salaries, wages, pensions, and severance payments, with functionalities restricted by regulation. With the change, Automatic Pix becomes the only Pix payment method that can be initiated directly from a salary account, enabling the debiting of recurring charges previously authorized by the account holder, such as utility bills, school fees, health plans, and subscription services.
In practice, authorization is granted only once, in the app of the institution where the account holder maintains the account, and subsequent charges are processed automatically, without the need for individual approval at each due date.
What remains prohibited
The other restrictions on salary accounts remain unchanged. Receiving Pix transactions in this type of account is still prohibited, except for funds originating from the National Treasury Secretariat and refunds of Pix transactions. Regular Pix transfers from salary accounts will also not be possible, thus preserving the specific purpose of this type of account.
Hybrid billing: Pix and bank slip in a single transaction.
The resolution also regulates so-called hybrid billing, which allows the recipient to offer, in a single billing transaction, payment alternatives via Pix (Brazil's instant payment system) and bank slip. This measure is expected to simplify the payer's experience and the financial reconciliation of companies that currently maintain both billing structures in parallel. The expected effective date for this point is February 1, 2027.
Strengthening anti-fraud measures
The regulation also addresses the marking, in the Directory of Transactional Account Identifiers (DICT), of CPF (Brazilian individual taxpayer registration number) and CNPJ (Brazilian corporate taxpayer registration number) numbers associated with suspected fraud, allowing participating institutions to share this information and adopt preventive measures. These provisions are scheduled to take effect on February 1, 2027, while the other provisions of the resolution take effect immediately.
Points of attention for recipient institutions and companies
For institutions participating in Pix, the deadline of July 2027 requires system adjustments, review of contracts and regulations for payroll accounts, and adjustments to the authorization, modification, and cancellation procedures for Automatic Pix payments, including obligations to inform the account holder.
For companies that operate with recurring billing, the change expands the reachable payer base and recommends reviewing consent flows, value limits, retry rules, and customer communication policies. It should be noted that canceling authorization stops future charges, but does not, in itself, terminate the service agreement signed with the provider, which requires contractual clarity regarding the effects of each action.

- “By opening up salary accounts for automatic Pix payments, the Central Bank preserves the restricted nature of this account and, at the same time, resolves a practical bottleneck: account holders who previously used the account only to receive payments can now honor recurring commitments without having to transfer funds to another institution.”
- “"Hybrid billing requires attention from both the finance and legal departments. Offering Pix and bank slips in a single transaction alters reconciliation flows and demands a review of contracts with payment service providers."”
- “The deadline of July 2027 is not comfortable for those who need to adapt systems, payroll regulations, and consent-based work schedules. The regulatory assessment initiated in 2026 reduces the risk of non-compliance upon entry into force.”
