Digital transformation after the COVID-19 pandemic period

April 22, 2020

Put Leonardo Neri – 22/04/2020 With the rapid spread of COVID-19 across several countries and the declaration of a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO), the general recommendation has been social isolation in order to reduce the transmission of the virus that causes the disease, which involves the closure of businesses, shopping malls and other businesses that do not provide services considered essential. The restriction on business operations has led companies to adopt alternative emergency measures to maintain their activities, albeit on a limited basis. In this sense, in recent days, there has been a significant growth in the virtualization of businesses, with the intensification of e-commerce, in addition to the use of digital platforms for interpersonal interaction and corporate communication. As a consequence, there has also been an increase in the vulnerability of users to virtual fraud and the misuse of personal data, bringing greater notoriety to the data protection measures provided for in the General Data Protection Law No. 13,709/2018 (LGPD), which was due to come into force in August of this year. However, on April 3, 2020, the Senate approved Bill (PL) No. 1,179/2020, which, among other measures, provides for a new postponement of the validity of the LGPD, postponing it until January 2021, with fines and sanctions valid only from August, also next year. The PL still needs to be approved by the Chamber of Deputies to come into force. Nevertheless, watch the video above for a brief consideration of how the extension of the LGPD will impact the new scenario of business virtualization, both for companies that own data and for users to whom the data belongs, seeking to help face the risks to which they expose themselves and their customers.
