A federal decree was signed that includes the Brasília National Park, in the Federal District, and the São Joaquim National Park, in Santa Catarina, under the Investment Partnerships Program of the Presidency of the Republic (PPI) and the National Privatization Program (PND). Based on this initiative, both units can be granted to the private sector for the provision of public services to support visitation, in which the private partner provides support for the conservation, protection and management actions of the conservation units.
The Investment Partnership Program (PPI) was created, within the scope of the Presidency of the Republic, by Law No. 13,334/2016 with the purpose of expanding and strengthening the relationship between the State and the private sector through the execution of partnership contracts and other privatization measures. In turn, the National Privatization Program (PND) aims to transfer activities carried out by the public sector to the private sector.
The Brasília National Park covers approximately 42,300 hectares. Its main attractions include pools supplied by water from nearby springs, trails, and the so-called Meditation Island, where birdwatching is possible.
The São Joaquim National Park has approximately 49,500 hectares and is located in the mountainous region of the state of Santa Catarina. Among its attractions are Morro da Igreja, Pedra Furada, cliffs, canyons, cliffs, waterfalls and rivers. It is possible to go hiking, horseback riding, climbing and mountain biking in the area, and it is home to fields and forest landscapes that are covered in snow in winter.
According to the Ministry of the Environment, Brazil has enormous potential to increase the number of visitors to conservation units. The number of visitors generates around 90,000 jobs, R$10.4 billion in sales, R$1.1 billion in taxes, R$2.7 billion in income and R$3.8 billion in value added to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
The increase in visits means that values like these multiply. Studies conducted by the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio) indicate that each R$ 1 spent by a visitor in a conservation unit turns into R$ 15 in the economy.
